Chapter Four

Antonio

The beautiful drive to my cousins’ takes a little more than two hours, and in that time my mind is consumed with thoughts of Allison. She’s unlike any woman I’ve ever met. She’s powerful, funny, sweet, kind of wicked, and lovely in all ways to me.

Our short time together rocked me to my soul, and leaving her was agonizing. She will be mine, and while I’m here in the United States, I will make sure she knows this. I couldn’t have anticipated that I’d meet a woman that so captivates me within minutes of arriving at the airport.

I so badly hope that she’ll join me at my cousins’ winery in Florence, South Carolina. As I near my destination, I resolve to do whatever it takes to make Allison mine.

I pull into the winding drive of my cousins’ vineyard and really look at the land surrounding me. The vines that I can see are thick with grapes, and the land stretches out before me in a way as lovely as a work of art.

As the house comes into view, I see my cousins waving excitedly, and I honk a couple times to let them know that I’m really happy to see them, too. I park the car, throw open the door, hop out of the rental, and am immediately embraced by my cousin, Maria.

Her twin brother, Marco, patiently awaits his turn and when it comes, he grabs me in a bear hug which I return wholeheartedly.

“Cousin, it’s been much too long!” Marco says before letting me go.

“Si, it really has. I love the place! The photos were great, but it’s so much better in person.” I wrap an arm around both their shoulders, and we start walking to the house.

“We have your room all made up and already have lunch cooking. It should be done in a couple of hours.” Maria says while giving me a squeeze.

“I can wait. Did you do the cooking, little one?” I ask, knowing the answer.

“Of course! I can’t have you wasting away under my roof, cousin. What would your mother think if I didn’t take care of her precious baby boy?” she teases.

“Everything you make is well worth the wait, my dear cousin. Tell me news of your lives here, please,” I ask.

“I’ve met a woman, cousin. You’ll meet her tonight at dinner. She’s the one for me, my Katie.” Marco launches into all of the reasons why he’s completely in love with the woman, Katie, and I listen fascinated by the story of how they met.

“You could have drowned, Marco!” I exclaim.

“I couldn’t just stand by and watch while waiting for help to arrive, so I had to swim into the riptide to get her; it’s the only thing that made sense. My life is now complete because of her. You’ll see what I mean when she comes here tonight. I might have saved her life, but she’s saved mine as well,” he says passionately with love gleaming from his eyes.

“I don’t doubt you at all, cousin.
